In 1957, the release of the old Universal monster films to terrestrial television channels created a monster fad that never really subsided. This boom allowed some very popular movie monsters to become perennial Halloween screening favorites. Of course, this makes them perfect choices for Halloween masks....

Has there ever been a more popular character in film and literature than Dracula? From his debut in 1897 to the present day, Dracula remains a striking figure. This is why it is no surprise that Dracula masks and costumes are popular and among the top selling Halloween costumes for the past 50 years. Part of the reason for this is the sheer variety of Dracula style costumes. First, there is the classic Dracula image that we are most familiar from the old movies. This is obviously the most popular of the costumes, but there are many other spins on the classic Dracula costume out there as well. For example, did you know that there are historical Dracula costumes that are based on Vlad Tepes? Or, that there are "re-fashioned" costumes that bring Dracula apparel into the 21st century? Then, if you want to really scare people you might opt for a Nosferatu style feral Dracula. If you want people to laugh then you could stick with a costume based on The Count from Sesame Street! Yes, the options for Dracula costumes literally go on forever!

Then there is the Dracula costume's close cousin. One of the most enduring of all the cinematic monsters is, of course, the Frankenstein Monster. Part of the reason for this is that the pathos of the creature makes him tragic and compelling. He is also one of the most recognisable monsters in history and that makes him perfect foil for Halloween masks. And, like Dracula, there are a multitude of Frankenstein costumes that range from the humorous to the downright scary. So, no matter what look you are going for there is a Frankenstein costume that will fit your needs.

The Wolfman remains one of the odder Halloween costumes. Even though the classic cinematic werewolf has his fans, Wolfman style Halloween masks have not always been supremely popular. One of the main reasons for this is the misconceptions people have about werewolf costumes. The two most common misconceptions about werewolf costumes are they are incredibly expensive and too hot to wear. In the past, it was true that werewolf costumes were incredibly expensive due to the painstaking skill required to weave all the hair into the fabric. However, thanks to the advent of modern technology the process for weaving the masks has made the prices come down. Plus, the costumes are designed for better ventilation and comfort so overheating really should not be a problem.

Of course, there are other classic monsters that can be tapped for Halloween masks such as The Mummy, The Phantom of the Opera, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and many others. What do they all have in common? They never really go out of style and they are all downright cool.
